Description

Advanced Building Envelope Inspections

Date: Wednesday, May 13

Time: 1 PM to 2 PM

Location: Virtual on Zoom

Price: Free

Host: Thornton Tomasetti

Building envelope inspection methods are advancing rapidly, offering new ways to assess building performance, durability, and risk. This program provides an overview of modern inspection tools and methodologies – including rope-access inspections, drone-based imaging, thermal analysis, and emerging AI-assisted technologies. Attendees will learn how these techniques are used in practice, their advantages and limitations, and how to determine the most effective approach for different building conditions and inspection needs.

After participating in this program, attendees will be able to:

  • Identify current building envelope inspection technologies and understand when each method is most appropriate.
  • Explain how thermal analysis, drone imagery, orthomosaic mapping, 3D point clouds, and AI-assisted defect detection are used to evaluate water intrusion, air leakage, thermal bridging, and other envelope concerns.
  • Apply practical considerations to select effective inspection strategies that balance access, accuracy, safety, and project goals for building envelope assessments.

Speakers:

  1. Brandon Perry, Senior Engineer (Thornton Tomasetti)
  2. Rachel Michelin, Office Co-Director (Thornton Tomasetti)
